ReplyDeleteInteresting site. I love some of the legends about how well (or not) some brand names and tag lines translate into other languages.
ReplyDeleteOne of the Pepsi taglines translated into Japanese ended up being something like "Pepsi - it brings your ancestors back to life!" Now THAT is pretty impressive for a soft drink.
The transliteration of "Coca-Cola" ended up meaning "Bite the wax tadpole." Mmmmmm...appetizing.
Then, there is the myth of Chevrolet, puzzled why their car, the Nova, was not selling well in South America. Of course, "no va" means "no go" in Spanish. This one is just an urban legend, but it underscores an important point, nonetheless, which is "See the World Through Your Customer's Eyes." (That is my business' tag line!)
